Alexander Robert Phillips received a B.A. in German Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine and an M.A. and Ph.D. in German studies from Cornell University in 2015. . In 2004-2005 he spent a year at the Humboldt Universität in Berlin, to which he returned as a DAAD scholar for the 2007-2008 academic year. His book project, The Ecoaesthetics of German Realism: Poetics, Politics, and the Conquest of Nature, is a study of the environmental thematic and the legacy of poetic realism in select works by Adalbert Stifter, Theodor Storm, Wilhelm Raabe, and Theodor Fontane.
